The world feels increasingly sorted. Good or bad. Right or wrong. Everyone on edge, waiting for the moment they say the wrong thing and feel the consequences of it. So people brace themselves. They edit. They perform. They stay guarded. I see what happens when that pressure lifts.
When people walk into my space, there’s often a pause. A scan. A moment of uncertainty. And then, slowly, something changes. Shoulders soften. Breaths deepen. Voices drop into a more natural register. The vigilance fades. It’s not because they’re being praised or agreed with. It’s because they realize they are not being judged. In that absence, people allow themselves to relax. To speak more honestly. To laugh more freely. To exist without defending who they are or what they think. The relief is visible. Almost physical.
We underestimate how exhausting it is to feel constantly evaluated. How much energy it takes to stay correct, careful, and composed. When that burden disappears, even briefly, people don’t become reckless. They become human.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can offer someone is not approval or reassurance, but the quiet understanding that they are safe to be exactly as they are.
