8675309… I Got Your Number

It is that day… for a good time, call! Happy Tax Day!

You can’t hide anything from your priest or your accountant. As someone who is not a member of the cloth, I can tell you that money has a funny way of telling on people. What’s surprising is how often people think they’re being discreet and then leave the most obvious paper trail.

So, purely hypothetically of course, here are a few things I would write next to Jenny’s number to keep your favorite distraction from becoming a distraction.

• Using a credit card for this can take a little finesse. Cash App makes it possible, but there’s a small extra step. You must first link your bank account before the option to add a credit card appears. Once it’s set, just ensure the funds are coming from the credit card, not your bank account, and it works like any other Cash App payment. You can even link the same bank account to two different Cash App profiles, making it easy to keep these two worlds nicely separate.

• If you decide to open a credit card dedicated solely to extracurricular activities, make sure it is not issued by the same bank where you hold your primary checking or savings account. Even if the card is only in your name, it has a way of appearing in shared banking apps. And between us, local credit unions are great for this. They usually offer better rates, and you can make payments in person without running everything through your primary bank account, keeping things off that radar. Just sayin…

• If you keep running into payment limits with Venmo or Cash App, it is usually not the app itself. Those limits are set by whoever issued your debit or credit card. So if your account is with Chase, you call Chase, not the app. The control always sits with the card issuer.

• Never co-mingle accounts. That is where small decisions turn into very real problems. Personal expenses running through a business account do not magically become business expenses, nor do they evaporate and disappear. They hit equity. And once you start affecting ownership and distributions, things get complicated in ways that are not nearly as fun as they sounded at the time.

• Nothing takes the delight out of an afternoon delight faster than talking about money. I’ll be the first to admit I love the ease of electronic payments, but not everyone does. Have that sorted out ahead of time so when you show up, you can focus on what you really came for.

• Cash feels easy, but it is not invisible. Larger or repeated withdrawals start to stand out, especially when they follow a pattern. Keep things a little less predictable and not all tucked into your wallet or hidden in the car. Yes, we know that one.

• And honestly, just talk about it. A quick conversation makes everything smoother, and you might land on something that works better for both of you or something you did not even realize was an option.

Money always tells a story, whether you realize it or not. Pay attention, be a little strategic, and for a good time… you already know who to call. 😉
